The DV versions of the Despicable Me releases also deliver a clear uptick in visible fine detail.

But Dolby Vision’s UHD BD images unquestionably eke out an apparently wider light range from OLED TVs than HDR10 ever has. I’m not saying here, to be clear, that Dolby Vision somehow makes OLED screens hit the same sort of peak brightness output levels you can get with the brightest LCD TVs. The precision with which Dolby Vision’s enhanced extra brightness intensity is delivered is also a sight to behold, with the brightest parts of the image and their surrounding areas containing subtleties of light variation that HDR10 images (which depend much more heavily on each TV’s own internal image management systems) can’t match. Photo: Universal/Illumination Entertainment There’s markedly more punch in small HDR brightness peaks such as the white strip in Vector’s orange tracksuit and the numerous reflections in the Minion’s glasses and goggles. In fact, it wasn’t until I saw Dolby Vision on 4K Blu-ray on the Loewe OLED that I realized how much even the best and brightest TVs currently struggle with accurately managing and balancing the lightest parts of HDR images.Īlso startling is how much more dynamic images look in Dolby Vision on the Loewe OLED than they do in HDR10s. This sense of more color detail is especially emphatic in the brightest parts of the picture, helping the OLED TV to deliver a much more solid, balanced, properly-integrated look to such brightness peaks than you get with any HDR10 image on any display I’ve seen to date. Colors, for instance, look gorgeously rich, beautifully natural, and above all exquisitely nuanced, revealing subtle tones that just don’t seem to be there if you’re watching in HDR10. Or maybe ‘wow’.ĭolby Vision improves pretty much every element of the HDR picture. In fact, the only word that fairly describes the experience is ‘beautiful’.

The picture quality both Despicable Me titles deliver in Dolby Vision mode is much more of a step up from HDR10 than I’d expected it to be. Despicable Me's Minions are made for HDR.
